2026 is Poised to Be Dubbed the Year of the Amphibian Adventure.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent Day of the Devs showcase was a delight to watch, my main revelation was a personal epiphany: I am convinced that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these leaping protagonists. Considering a band of frogs is termed an army, it appears they are staking their claim.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Frogs are far from new to the world of games. From the arcade classic Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a special place. However, their visibility has markedly increased in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam yields an absolute deluge of results. While, some of these are low-budget titles, a sizable number are bona fide Frog Games.

A Data-Driven Dive

To understand this phenomenon, I performed a detailed review into the last half-decade of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My criteria was somewhat arbitrary, focusing on games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The data reveal an unmistakable trend: a steady rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The frog's growing prominence in the broader culture is somewhat apparent elsewhere, for example the popularity of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. Yet, the wave in gaming appears especially pronounced.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

Frankly, this is a trend I can fully endorse. Frogs have built-in creative potential for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are incredibly easy to be designed as quirky characters that frequently end up as a standout feature in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their stretchy limbs and prehensile tongues enable a myriad of unique mechanics.

A number of the showcased games directly leverage these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance

So, what can we expect in 2026? Given five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even started—and the possibility for more—the stage is set for it to be the most significant year for amphibian gaming.

When these games find success—and historically, games from this showcase often do—we may indeed be witnessing a true frog gaming renaissance.
