Keely Hodgkinson Concludes Campaign with Victorious Display at Athlos Meet in New York
Hodgkinson achieved her fastest time of one minute 54.61 seconds last year in London.
Keely Hodgkinson finished her two-lap campaign with a triumph at the all-female Athlos meet in NYC on Friday evening.
{The current Olympic gold medallist, who earned bronze at the global championships recently, excelled in an outstanding victory in 1:56.53 in what was only her sixth race in a year affected by a hamstring injury.
Fellow Briton and global silver winner Georgia Bell took the runner-up spot once more in one minute 58.33 seconds, while the athlete from St Vincent Shafiqua M. (one minute 58.57) secured third place.
"I've barely raced this year so it was likely easier for me to compete and be motivated to perform," said the 23-year-old.
"The atmosphere out there is incredible so it was extremely enjoyable."
The female-exclusive event filled the stadium in its second edition, introducing a party atmosphere to traditional track, with live music and Tiffany & Co. crowns replacing standard medals.
The tennis legend with 23 major titles Serena W., who is married to the founder of Athlos Alexis O., was on hand to award the victors with their crowns.
Last year's winners received sixty thousand dollars (forty-four thousand six hundred and three pounds) - one of the largest prize purses in athletics.
The competition also drew several top athletes, as Kenya's triple Olympic champion and world record holder Faith K. won the mile, finishing in 4:17.78.
American Brittany B., the 200m bronze medallist from last year's Paris Olympics, won the 100m and 200m double.
